The new stripes on your face and the color of your nose mean you're old enough to be a Royal Mjuzi. But you must learn to be quiet to hear the Lions of the Past.

Rafiki, The Rise of Scar

Royal Mjuzi is the title given to the knowledge-keeper of the Pride Lands and at the Tree of Life. They also act as an advisor to the Royal family.

Apprentices are chosen by the Great Lions at the time of their birth. However, they do not begin their training until they are old enough, which is judged by the stripes on their face and the color of their nose. An apprentice must also be formally introduced to the royal family.

Some of the duties of a Royal Mjuzi are:

  • Providing the monarchy with guidance and advice
  • Speaking with the Great Lions of the Past for others
  • Presiding over Kupatana
  • Training an apprentice
  • Healing injuries and illnesses
  • Painting the history of the Pride Lands
  • Painting the history of the Tree of Life
  • Knowing all of the Pride Lands' celebrations
  • Escorting animals to Pride Rock
  • Plant a baobab sapling in Mizimu Grove while they're in training for their Mpando Mpaya
  • Tell of the passing of the current monarchs
  • Anointing future rulers
  • Presenting the newborn future ruler.
  • Presiding over weddings
