Kion: What is it? What does it mean?

Rafiki: It is a sign of terrible evil.

Kion and Rafiki, Divide and Conquer

The Mark of Evil is an ominous image that has appeared in fire and in Paintings of the Past. It is in the shape of Scar's left eye. It appears where the source of fire Scar's spirit appeared through burned, and is said to specifically be a venomous cobra bite.

Information[]

According to the Paintings of the Past, the Mark of Evil is a symbol associated with evil lions of the Pride Lands' past. The very first Lion Guard, led by Askari, created a powerful force to halt the evil lions, using this symbol as their marking.

According to the story told by Scar in "Battle for the Pride Lands", the Mark of Evil appears to refer to a very specific type of scar, one caused by a cobra bite, in which the venom causes bad thoughts and great pain and anger to the victim. If the victim wields the Roar of the Elders, they will lose control of their powers and will unintentionally use the Dark Roar, leading to devastating results. It's said by Rafiki that should the venom remain within the victim for too long, they will be stripped of their knowledge of right and wrong, however the effects do vary. Tuliza plants are capable of easing the effects, but only for a short time. Should the victim want to be healed, they must journey to the Tree of Life and go through several rituals and/or tasks for long periods of time before they are finally healed. It's implied that whilst the venom within the Mark of Evil can be neutralized, the physical scar would remain on the victim for the rest of their lives.

Battle for the Pride Lands[]

TLG-Battle-for the-Pride Lands (1986)

the Earth closing up

When the Lion Guard and their allies attack the Outlands, Scar orders Ushari to attack Kion, giving him a facial wound identical to Scar's. Scar tells his grand-nephew that he has the Mark of Evil and is now bound to his destiny to become evil. Kion denies Scar's tauntings and gives into his pure nature by summoning the Great Lions of the Past to judge Scar. The spirits destroy Scar by raining upon him, but not before the apparition tells him that the Roar is cursed and that they are the same.

Once Scar and Ushari are gone with the flames, the Mark of Evil in the caldera is neutralized. Despite the Lion Guard's victory over Scar's forces, Kion retains the Mark of Evil from the confrontation, severing him of his control of the Roar of the Elders and turning him evil. To remedy this, Rafiki sends the Lion Guard to the Tree of Life to heal Kion's wounds.

Friends to the End []

En-route to the Tree of Life, Kion's scar begins to bother him more, leading to a rift between him and the Lion Guard, specifically Bunga, who believes that Ushari's venom has taken over Kion. Kion separates himself from his friends and begins to hallucinate the spirit of Scar telling him that he is evil. Kion snaps out of his fears and convinces himself that he will never act like Scar.

Return to the Pride Lands[]

When the Lion Guard return to the Pride Lands, Vitani and her Lion Guard, (who joined Simba's Pride whilst the Lion Guard were away) halt them and challenges Kion upon seeing that he has the Mark of Evil.

Trivia[]

  • While Kovu has a scar on his eye, it is not the Mark of Evil because he was not bitten by a cobra.
