Family[]
Simba[]
“ | I'm proud that you're my son | ” |
–Simba to Kion The Lion Guard: The Rise of Scar |
Although Kion expressed sadness and fear when he was scolded by his father in Return of the Roar, he will still do everything that's possible to serve his father and, like Beshte, he is also afraid of disappointing his father. Kion will always trust his father's judgment and wants to make him proud.
Nala[]
“ | Forgive you? There's nothing to forgive. You were saving my life. | ” |
–Nala to Kion Never Roar Again |
Kion's mother and (former) queen. Unlike Simba, Nala immediately accepted Kion's choices for the new Lion Guard. She expressed immense pride in her son's Guard for defeating Janja's clan and saving Kiara in Return of the Roar.
Kion shows great concern whenever Nala is in great peril. As seen in Never Roar Again when he loses it at Janja and his clan for attacking Nala. He also expresses great fear and remorse for almost accidentally hurting Nala with the Roar, showing how much he cares for her.
Kiara[]
“ | So we make a good team. And that's how we'll find Mom, by working together. | ” |
–Kion to Kiara The Trail to Udugu |
Kiara is Kion's older sister. Unlike Scar with Mufasa, Kion does not have any resentment or jealousy towards his older sibling, despite the fact that Kiara is the heir to the throne. He instead feels content that she is the future queen.
Although the two cubs appear to have sibling rivalry, they do still care deeply for each other. In Can't Wait to be Queen, the two cubs are not getting along at first, but Kion rescues Kiara from Janja's clan at the end. The cubs can also occasionally be a little snarky with one another, as seen at the start of Return of the Roar.
Although, as of the episode, The Trail to Udugu, Kion and Kiara seem to work together a lot more. Their sibling rivalry seems to have diminished. Their sibling rivalry could have come from their abilities in leadership, Kion of the Lion Guard and Kiara's eventual reign as queen.
In "Battle for the Pride Lands", after the final battle with Scar, Kiara was horrified when she saw the scar on Kion's face and expressed her concerns for him. Before The Lion Guard made their departure from the Pridelands, Kiara wished Kion good luck and promised to look after Tiifu and Zuri.
After the Lion Guard returns from the Tree of Life, Kion sees that Kiara and Kovu are madly in love, just like himself and Queen Rani. That night, Kion talks with Kiara about Rani, explaining how he greatly misses her and the Night Pride. Kiara tells Kion that their parents would understand if he decides to go back to the Tree of Life. At the Tree of Life, Kiara is happy to be attending her brother's coronation and wedding.
Mufasa[]
“ | Thank you, Grandfather. That makes me feel better. I'm sorry I stayed away. I promise I won't be afraid to talk to you again. | ” |
–Kion to Mufasa Long Live the Queen |
Mufasa is Kion's paternal grandfather, and his primary mentor as leader of the Guard. Kion looks up to his wise grandfather, who is there to guide him whenever he is in doubt. If the cub is ever uncertain of what to do, Mufasa always reassures him that everything will be fine, although he never exactly tells him what to do. In Return of the Roar, Mufasa reassured him that the Roar of the Elders would be there when he needed it. Mufasa is never ever cross with his grandson and Kion is never afraid of him, not even when he confessed that it was his fault Scar returned. Kion is always on good terms with Mufasa.
In Season 3, after Ushari bit him, Kion had a scar on his face and struggled with losing his temper and control of his Roar. This resulted in him becoming too ashamed of his scar to let Mufasa see him. However, in Long Live the Queen, Rani encouraged Kion to talk to Mufasa and reassured him that he didn't need to be afraid. Kion talked to Mufasa for the first time in a long while, and realized that Mufasa was never angry with or ashamed of him; that he had only been worried that Kion had forgotten about him. After Kion explained himself, Mufasa assured Kion that he would always be there for Kion no matter what.
In The Lake of Reflection, Mufasa understands that Kion is a capable enough leader to give up the Roar and informs him of where he should go. In Return to the Pride Lands, at the wedding of Kion and Rani, Mufasa proudly looks down at his grandson and granddaughter-in-law.
Scar[]
“ | Of course! I do have another choice, Scar. Something only one Lion Guard leader can do to another. I forgive you. | ” |
–Kion to Scar Battle for the Pride Lands] |
In "The Rise of Scar", Kion inadvertently allows Janja's taunts to get in his head and uses the Roar of the Elders in anger. As a result, he accidentally makes the Outlands Volcano erupt and summons Scar, which turns out to be the completion of a spell discovered by Ushari. Kion notices Scar for the first time in "Divide and Conquer". In "The Scorpion's Sting", Kion is upset to learn that Scar has sent a scorpion to envenomate Simba. Ever since then, Kion has made it his mission to find a way to defeat the evil lion and will stop at nothing to do so.
In the Season 3 opener, during the final battle with Scar, Kion realizes that it's up to Great Kings to judge Scar and willingly forgives his granduncle for his evil deeds before putting his spirit to rest, with help from the Kings of the Past. Kion's darkest fear is that he will give into his anger and use the Roar of the Elders for evil, just like Scar. Kion fears this a lot in Season 3 whenever his scar is hurting and his Roar is out of control. In "Friends to the End", Kion sees a vision of Scar in puddle, telling him that he is destined to be a villain. Fortunately, Kion finds healing and release at the Tree of Life, though he will bear his scar for the rest of his life.
Bunga[]
“ | Just checking and just so you know even if you do turn evil, I'll still be your best friend. | ” |
–Bunga to Kion Friends to the End |
When Kion first got the Roar of the Elders, Bunga was impressed by his friend's ability. Bunga was ecstatic after discovering that Kion was to become the leader of the Lion Guard. Despite Bunga's recklessness and childish antics, Kion is shown, on numerous occasions to trust his best friend, even appointing Bunga to the Guard as the Guard's Bravest. In "Never Roar Again", Kion opens up to Bunga, telling him that is afraid to use the Roar of the Elders. Upon hearing this, Bunga tells Kion that, as the Pridelands's Fiercest, he must use the Roar when it's needed. Throughout the series, Bunga continues to aid Kion and be his supportive friend.
In "Bunga and the King", Kion learns that Bunga is his adoptive uncle.
In "Battle for the Pridelands", after Kion gets his scar, his Roar sends Bunga flying across the Pridelands by accident. However, Bunga tells his friend that he enjoyed it. Throughout Season 3, however, Bunga continues to act silly and Kion lashes out at him in rage (under the influence of damage from Ushari's venom). In "The Race to Tuliza", Kion yells at Bunga to stop with the jokes.
In "Friends to the End", Bunga grows wary of his best friend, believing the venom inside Kion is turning him evil. However, near the end of the episode, Bunga tells Kion that he will be his best friend whether he turns evil or not. In "The Tree of Life", Kion gets angry with Bunga for causing a rockslide outside the Tree of Life. In "The Lake of Reflection", Bunga (along with everyone else) reminds Kion of the time they were infants and he showed them how be a team. In "Triumph of the Roar", Bunga is overjoyed to see Kion's newly mastered Roar in action.
In the series finale, Bunga is ecstatic to see his best friend become the new king of the Tree of Life.
Rani[]
“ | We're going to make a great team | ” |
–Kion to Rani Return to the Pride Lands |
Kion's mate and current queen. Kion and Rani first met when Bunga accidentally caused a rockslide on the way to the Tree of Life. Their relationship started off as bad, with Rani assuming that Kion and The Lion Guard were dangerous after Kion accidentally unleashed the Roar of the Elders on her younger brother, Baliyo. Rani was so outraged, she wanted to banish the Guard from the Tree of Life forever, but after a talk with her grandmother Queen Janna, and the spirits of her parents, Rani reluctantly agreed to welcome the Guard to the Tree of Life.
Rani was pleased that Kion put Ono's needs before his own, though she still distrusted him for sending Baliyo flying. In The River of Patience, Rani brought them to her grandmother, but wanted them to leave as soon as possible. However, she was still pleased when Kion helped her stop Makucha's Army. In The Lake of Reflection, she distrusted Kion as a leader, but she was still worried about his healing. However, after the fight in that same episode, Rani started to appreciate Kion and his friends. In Long Live the Queen, Rani, and Kion really open up to one another after the death of Queen Janna. When Rani is in tears after her grandmother's death, Kion sympathizes with her by letting her sob into his neck and comforting her. At Queen Janna's funeral, Kion and Rani console one another about their fears and end up becoming close friends. Kion smiles up at Rani when she becomes Queen of the Tree of Life.
In Triumph of the Roar, Rani starts showing adoration for Kion, wishing for the Roar of the Elders to be returned to the Tree of Life. She especially shows adoration for him after seeing how he single-handedly ends Mama Binturong's attack on the Tree of Life. In Journey to the Pride Lands, Kion and Rani have a much closer friendship, which eventually blossoms into romance. At this point, Kion secretly considers staying at the Tree of Life after Rani asks him to be her king. In Return to the Pride Lands, after giving the Roar of the Elders to Vitani, Kion returns to the Tree of Life, where he and Rani get married and Kion is given a coronation as the new king of the Tree of Life.
Baliyo[]
“ | Hey, Kion. Just don't do that Roar thing at me again. Ever. | ” |
–Baliyo to Kion The Tree of Life |
Baliyo is Kion's brother-in-law.
When Kion and Baliyo first met, Baliyo attacked him after assuming that the Lion Guard was dangerous. Baliyo also taunts Kion and is accidentally blown away by Kion's Roar. When Baliyo's sister, Rani, finally decides to welcome the Lion Guard to the Tree of Life, he doesn't show any ill feelings towards the Guard but asked Kion to never use the Roar on him again, while also saying he was impressed by it. As the season went on, Baliyo, Kion and The Night Pride had gotten to know each other and this caused them to gradually develop a good relationship.
In "The River of Patience", when Kion notices the Night Pride are fighting Mackucha's army and Baliyo gets bitten by Ora, Kion rushes over to help, showing that he does like the Night Pride, especially Baliyo. He asked Kion to use the Roar on the bad guys, showing that from then on he had begun to see Kion as more than just a friend.
In "The Lake of Reflection", when Makucha's Army comes back to the Tree of Life, Baliyo and the Night Pride listen to Kion's instructions on how to run off Mackucha's Army, showing that they now trust Kion as a leader. In "Long Live the Queen", Kion and Baliyo have become closer to each other, after the death of Baliyo's grandmother, Queen Janna. In "Return to the Pridelands", Kion and Baliyo become brothers-in-law after Kion marries Baliyo's sister, Rani. He also becomes Baliyo's king.

“ | Indeed. I've heard stories of a lion with a powerful roar. But not since I was a cub. | ” |
–Surak about Kion The Tree of Life |
Surak is Kion's uncle-in-law.
Kion and Surak started off on hostile grounds due to a misunderstanding. It was after Kion and his friends made amends that showed their true intentions, and Kion put his friend Ono before himself, that Surak and the Night Pride began to give him a chance. Surak correctly suspected Kion wielded the Roar of the Elders after witnessing it the first time.
As Kion and the Guard helped the Night Pride defend the Tree of Life from Makucha's Army, Surak came to respect Kion as a fierce warrior and a worthy leader, especially after Kion finally mastered the Roar and used it to banish the villains far away from the Tree of Life.
Kion would soon become Surak's nephew-in-law by Kion's marriage to Rani, as well as Surak's king.
Kovu[]
“ | Anga, is Kovu alone? | ” |
–Kion to Anga about Kovu Return to the Pride Lands |
Kovu is Kion's sororal brother-in-law.
Kion first met Kovu when Jasiri asked him to talk to Kovu's pride who took her clan's watering hole. When Kion offers to talk to his father about welcoming Kovu and his pride to the Pride Lands (unaware that Kovu's family was banished), Kovu expresses excitment of the idea. Kion is also surprised to learn that Kovu has met Kiara in the past. However, after Kion sends Zira and her pride flying with the Roar, Kion falls under the impression that Kovu was in on Zira's plot and drives him off. Years later, while Kion is away at the Tree of Life, Kovu and Kiara become mates, making Kovu a part of Kion's family. When Kion engages Vitani's Lion Guard, Kiara appears to break up the fight, followed by Kovu. At first, Kion thought Kovu would attack her, but after Kiara explains what happened during Kion's absence, Kion accepts Kovu as a member of his family, putting the past behind them both.
Vitani[]
“ | Vitani, as leader of the Lion Guard, you'll need the mark of the Guard and the Roar. | ” |
–Kion to Vitani Return to the Pride Lands |
In Season 3, after Kion and his friends return to the Pride Lands, they are not happy with Vitani and other Outlander lionesses protecting the Pride Lands. Even when Kiara and Kovu clear up the initial misunderstanding between Kion and Vitani, the original Lion Guard is not happy that Vitani's guard has taken over their job, and the two groups challenge one another to a series of competitions to prove their authority. The competition comes down to a tiebreaker between the leaders. Vitani challenges Kion to a mashindano. Kion realizes that Vitani has a right to win the competition after challenging him even without the Roar, dubbing Vitani the winner and the Pride Lands' true Fiercest. Kion bestows the Mark of the Guard and the Roar of the Elders upon Vitani. Kion then demonstrates to the new leader how he himself mastered the Roar by lifting Pride Rock, which results in both leaders, old and new, having a newfound respect for one another.

In Season 3, in "Battle for the Pridelands", Fuli says that Kion will not be alone when the Pridelanders go into battle with Scar. In "Friends to the End", she fears that Kion's anger is getting out of control when he starts being mean to everyone (including herself). However, she still trusts that Kion would never turn evil. Fuli becomes more worried when Kion runs off, feeling ashamed of himself.
