Dolphins are cetaceans that appear in The Lion Guard universe.

Appearance

In the Real World

Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are named after the humps on the front of their dorsal fins. They can range from gray, white, or pink in color.

In The Lion Guard

The only known dolphin is Lumba-Lumba. She is pink with smaller patches on parts of her body and a lighter underside.

Information

Dolphins have a complex system of squeaks and whistles. Schools have been known to come to the aid of an injured dolphin and help it to the surface.

Dolphins track their prey through the expert use of echolocation. They can make up to 1,000 clicking noises per second. These sounds travel underwater until they encounter objects, then bounce back to their dolphin senders, revealing the location, size, and shape of their target.

When dolphins are feeding, that target is often a bottom-dwelling fish, though they also eat shrimp and squid. These clever animals are also sometimes spotted following fishing boats in hopes of dining on leftovers.

Trivia

  • Although pink dolphin may also refer to Amazonian River dolphins and certain individuals of the bottlenose dolphin species, Lumba-Lumba is most likely to be an Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin or a Chinese white dolphin for her pigmentation and her name connection to Indonesian culture.
