Kion is Askari's distant relative and (until Vitani) his latest successor as Leader of the Lion Guard. Upon meeting him for the very first time, Askari spoke briefly with Kion, who had come to give up the Roar after realizing he had always been a leader, even before he got the Roar, which he knew was not what made him a leader, to begin with. Pleased by this news, Askari declared Kion was ready and began teaching him all the powers the Roar is capable of.
After Kion understood Askari's words that only one, who is able to let go of the Roar completely can truly master it, he passes on the mantle of Leader of the Lion Guard and the Roar of the Elders to Vitani. Afterward, Askari appears, congratulating Kion for truly mastering the Roar and telling him there is another place (the Tree of Life) that could use the Roar's help.
Alongside the spirits of Mufasa and Janna, Askari proudly watched over his relative, as Kion became mates with Queen Rani and the new King of the Tree of Life.
When Vitani and Kovu met Askari's spirit (after Kion passed down the mantle of Leader of the Lion Guard to Vitani), they were amazed. Vitani asked Kion what it means to master the Roar. Kion demonstrated by lifting Pride Rock off the ground then lowering it safely, to the amazement of all the Pride Landers. Vitani is currently Askari's successor to the Lion Guard legacy. Vitani likely has Askari's blessing to be leader of the Lion Guard of the Pride Lands and wielder of the Roar.
Matembo's herd were amazed to meet Askari's spirit. As elephants of the Pride Lands, they respect Askari, the leader of the first Lion Guard, for bringing peace between the elephants and lions long ago.
